Brand-Rex Ltd was founded in 1972 as a joint venture between Brand-Rex Corporation and British Enkalon, two divisions of AKZO to manufacture computer based cabling.

The company was founded after well known computer related customers of the then US based Brand-Rex became heavily involved in the European marketplace and the company management sensed an opportunity for growth overseas.  Several locations were evaluated before the ‘new town’ of Glenrothes was selected for its facilities to support industrial growth and due to the large number of high technology companies in the local area.

His Royal Highness Price Bernhard of The Netherlands visited the chosen site of what would be the Brand-Rex Limited plant in April 1972 to perform a tree planting ceremony alongside George S Howard, the first General Manager of Brand-Rex Limited and Andrianus deZeeuw, then CEO of British Enkalon Ltd.

The Brand-Rex Glenrothes site officially opened on the 9th June 1973, with an initial staff of just 25 and an original building included factory and office space of approximately 57,000 sq ft.

From the beginning the key focus was on creating a world class manufacturing facility and the first few months of 1973 were spent training an entire work force on manufacturing excellence – a concept that still runs deep at the heart of the company today.
The first few years of business were successful, with a number of high profile companies such as BT, WAN, Olivetti, ICL, DEC and Bull choosing to work with Brand-Rex.

The growth continued late into the 70’s, when Brand-Rex was appointed as a major supplier to IBM in the UK, France and Germany, leading to 10,000 sq ft expansion to create new manufacturing capacity and an in increase in work force to 100.

The company continued to grow throughout the 80’s and as the market developed focussed on introducing new products and offerings, such as in 1980 when Brand-Rex opened one of the first irradiation units in Europe, adding a further 30,000 sq ft of manufacturing space.

In 1989 one of the world’s leading cable manufacturers, BICC bought Brand-Rex to further expand its cable manufacturing business.  Brand-Rex Limited was subsequently renamed BICC Brand-Rex and gained three new manufacturing sites in Leigh, Helsby and the Philippines, significantly increasing manufacturing capabilities and capacity, allowing the business to continue to diversify across new markets.

Throughout the 1990’s Brand-Rex continued to lead the market and to launch new solutions such as a Cat5 cable range in 1992, their first ever component range in 1995 and then the GigaPlus Category 5e range of solutions in 1997

During this period Brand-Rex also won a range of major projects such as the prestigious channel tunnel rolling stock project and several London Underground projects on the back of achieving London Underground Approval.

During this period Brand-Rex also launched the Millennium program, a ground-breaking approach to training and accrediting partners who could deliver Brand-Rex data communications’ solutions and of course provide the legendary 25 year warranty.  This pioneering approach became the bench mark for the industry.

The millennium sparked the beginning of a new era for Brand-Rex after BICC Group sold the company to Caradon (Novar plc).  After a review of operations in early 2002, in excess of £5m was invested to consolidate and improve the manufacturing sites to meet the demands of the expanding global communications and data networking market.

The new millennium also saw a variety of new and innovative solutions launched such as the Cat6Plus range in 2002 and then in 2006 a full range of shielded and unshielded 10GPlus Augmented Category 6 solutions became one of the first to be classified as an Augmented Category 6/Class EA system.

In 2006 Brand-Rex was acquired by Gores Group who then embarked on a £11.5m investment programme to create a world class manufacturing site and Customer Innovation Centre.

The investment saw the introduction of new core lines and the restructuring and upgrading of the manufacturing facilities crucial to achieving world-challenging efficiency and capacity levels in order to create the new innovative product solutions offered today.

Present Day

In 2008 after a short tenure, Gores Group sold Brand-Rex to Murray Capital, bringing the ownership of the company back to Scotland.  2011 saw Brand-Rex accomplish another exceptional achievement by becoming the first Cabling Company to achieve Carbon Neutral Status for its global operations, and then in 2012 the first to offer carbon neutral products.

2015 saw Brand-Rex become part of the Leviton family, where the Brand-Rex products are a perfect complimentary fit alongside the existing Leviton product portfolio benefitting customers around the globe.
